The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
